Figma to WordPress: How to Convert a Design Properly

Converting a Figma design to WordPress means rebuilding it natively in the platform — as an Elementor build with flex containers, or as a hand-coded theme — rather than exporting code from the design file. There is no export that produces a maintainable WordPress site: Figma describes a fixed canvas, WordPress has to produce a document that reflows at every width and stays editable by whoever owns it.

Which route is right depends on who will maintain the site afterwards, not on which is technically purer. Below is how to choose, what each route costs you, and what a faithful conversion actually involves.

Figma to WordPress: the three routes

1. A page builder, built natively

Elementor’s flex containers map almost one-to-one onto Figma’s auto-layout, so a well-structured file converts close to mechanically. The client keeps the ability to edit text, images and whole sections afterwards without a developer.

This is the right answer for most marketing sites, portfolios and brochure sites — which is to say, most sites. The trade-off is a little more page weight than hand-coded markup, most of which is recoverable with the usual image, font and script discipline.

2. A hand-coded custom theme

Maximum control, minimum markup, and a performance ceiling a builder cannot reach. The cost is that every future content change that isn’t plain text needs a developer, which for most businesses means it never happens.

Worth it when the site is mostly bespoke interaction, when you have in-house development, or when a hard performance budget is a stated requirement rather than an aspiration.

3. An automated Figma-to-WordPress converter

Plugins and services that promise one-click conversion write absolute positioning and hard pixel values into the page. The output matches the mockup at one screen width and breaks at every other, and it cannot be edited afterwards because every element is welded to a coordinate.

There is no version of this that produces a site worth maintaining. It is listed here so you can recognise it in a quote.

How to choose between them

  • Who updates the site in six months? If the answer is a marketing person, a builder-based build is the only honest choice.
  • How often does the layout change, not just the words? Frequent layout change favours a builder. Static layout with changing copy works either way.
  • Is there a real performance requirement? A stated budget — a Core Web Vitals threshold in a contract — favours a custom theme. “We want it fast” does not; that is achievable in a builder with discipline.
  • What’s the lifespan? A campaign site that lives eight months is a different decision to a company site expected to run five years.

What a faithful conversion actually involves

Extract the design system first

Before any page gets built: every colour actually used as a hex value, the full type scale with size, weight, line-height and letter-spacing per level, the repeating spacing rhythm, the content width and page padding, and which breakpoints have artboards. Those go into the platform as global styles.

Skipping this is what produces a site where changing the brand colour means editing ninety places. It is twenty minutes of work that determines whether the site is maintainable.

Rebuild the layout, don’t trace it

A Figma auto-layout frame becomes a container: vertical becomes a column, horizontal becomes a row, item spacing becomes gap, padding becomes padding, “fill container” becomes grow and “hug contents” becomes auto width. Where the file uses auto-layout properly this is close to mechanical. Where it doesn’t, someone is interpreting intent — which is precisely the part no converter can do.

Decide the responsive behaviour deliberately

Most files are drawn at one or two widths. Everything else is a decision. Two rules prevent most breakage: never set a fixed height on anything containing text, and give every row-direction container an explicit mobile width so it stacks cleanly instead of wrapping into a cramped grid.

Verify by measurement

Computed font-size, line-height and letter-spacing checked against the file at every heading level; actual pixel gaps between sections measured top to bottom; the page checked at 360px, 768px, 1024px and 1440px rather than the two it was designed at. Comparing screenshots by eye misses exactly what a client notices a week later.

What it costs and how long it takes

I quote a fixed price per project after reading the file, because the same page count can be two very different jobs. The number moves on how many genuinely distinct templates exist behind the page count, how cleanly the file uses auto-layout, how much of the page is content-driven rather than typed in once, and whether anything non-standard is attached — multi-language, a catalogue, an integration.

As a guide to timing: a single landing page from a clean file is typically four to eight hours; a five-page marketing site with a design system, two to four days; anything with custom functionality, longer and quoted separately. A messy file — no auto-layout, no components, inconsistent spacing — roughly doubles the layout time.

Can you convert Figma to WordPress automatically?

Not in any way that produces a maintainable site. Automated converters output absolutely-positioned markup that matches the design at a single screen width and cannot be edited afterwards. Every professional conversion is a manual rebuild.

Is Elementor or a custom theme better for a Figma conversion?

It depends on who maintains the site. A builder keeps editing in the client’s hands and suits most marketing and portfolio sites. A custom theme gives more control and less markup, and suits sites with in-house developers or a contractual performance budget.

How long does a Figma to WordPress conversion take?

A single landing page from a clean auto-layout file is typically four to eight hours of work. A five-page marketing site with a design system is two to four days. Custom functionality — filtering, multi-language, a catalogue — runs longer and is quoted separately.

Does my Figma file need auto-layout?

It converts much faster and more accurately if it does, because auto-layout frames translate almost directly into flex containers. Without it, the builder has to infer how each section should reflow, which adds time and adds room for the result to drift from your intent.

Will the WordPress site look exactly like the Figma design?

At the widths you designed for, yes — type, spacing and colour are checked against the file’s computed values rather than by eye. Widths you didn’t draw are decisions, and they should be agreed with you rather than guessed at by whoever is building.

Who owns the site when it’s finished?

You do. The domain, the hosting and the plugin licences stay in your name, and you get administrator credentials plus a short guide to the things you’ll actually change.
